Working with the Mob and Backing Aboriginal Businesses

claire9426

We love working with Aboriginal organisations because the people we’ve met and worked with have been open, sharing, warm, and funny - even when they're making fun of us. The sense of community, the strength of culture, and the generosity of knowledge are unlike anything else. We get so much from working alongside First Nations businesses and not for profits—not because we think we have all the answers, but because we believe in what they do, and we want to be part of it.

We see the power, resilience, and innovation of First Nations businesses firsthand. These businesses are thriving, shaping industries, and creating sustainable futures. The work we do with First Nations organisations isn’t about us—it’s about supporting the incredible work they’re already leading.

We’re Not Here to Play the White Knight

Let’s be clear—we’re not here to swoop in and “save” anyone. That’s not allyship, and it’s certainly not effective. Our intent is genuine. We don’t support black cladding, we don’t make unilateral decisions on behalf of others, and we don’t engage in partnerships to make ourselves look good. We are here because we believe in a fairer, more just world where First Nations organisations have the autonomy, power, and resources to drive their own success.

Black cladding—the practice of non-Indigenous businesses using Aboriginal organisations as a front to win contracts without providing genuine benefits—undermines real economic independence for First Nations people. It takes opportunities away from legitimate First Nations businesses and perpetuates inequity. We actively reject these exploitative practices and call them out when we see them.

Being an ally is about showing up, standing up, and learning. True allyship means listening deeply, following the lead of First Nations people, and using our platform to amplify their voices rather than speaking over them. It means committing to lifelong learning, acknowledging when we get things wrong, and always striving to do better.

First Nations Businesses Are Leading the Way

There are thousands of knowledgeable, sustainable, and profitable First Nations businesses and entrepreneurs across the country. They are reclaiming economic independence, reasserting cultural authority, and creating jobs and opportunities for future generations.

We don’t just want to support First Nations businesses—we want to see them succeed on their own terms. And the reality is, when First Nations organisations thrive, everyone benefits. When Aboriginal organisations succeed, communities flourish. When communities flourish, economies grow. The ripple effect of First Nations-led success benefits us all—socially, culturally, and economically.

The statistics back it up. First Nations businesses contribute over $4.8 billion to the Australian economy annually, and companies that engage Aboriginal businesses see higher levels of innovation, stronger community connections, and improved business outcomes. (Supply Nation, 2023)

We’ve written about the power of First Nations-led industries before—just look at our blog on sandalwood and the immense economic and cultural value of keeping control of resources in First Nations hands.

Collaboration, Not Just Services

We don’t believe in transactional relationships where we simply provide a service and move on. That’s not how lasting change happens. Our approach is about true collaboration—sharing knowledge, skills, and strategy to ensure First Nations organisations continue to grow and succeed on their own terms. Whether it’s governance support, strategic planning, or economic development, we work alongside organisations to create practical, long-term solutions that build strength and resilience and support self-determination.

We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we show up, we listen, and we work alongside First Nations organisations to build a future that is strong, fair, and led by the people who know their communities best.
